Biography

David Schröter is a postdoctoral researcher at the Université de Haute-Alsace (UHA), and part of the Research Centre on Economies, Societies, Arts and Techniques (CRESAT). His research explores the financial and informational flows that accompany mining for the energy transitions, specifically in the context of commodity trading. David obtained his PhD at the Université de Lausanne (UNIL) under the supervision of Prof. Mark Goodale. In his doctoral dissertation “Before Lithium, Borax? Navigating Temporalities of Extraction at the Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia,” he describes the ways historical and contemporary experiences of mining in the extractive region shaped how the state-led lithium extraction project was understood and related to. In over 20 months of ethnographic fieldwork, David conducted ethnographic fieldwork working alongside borax miners and with social organisations attempting to obtain information about, prepare for, and shape the lithium extraction project in their interest. Prior to his PhD, David has worked on rights claims of neighbourhood councils in El Alto, Bolivia, obtaining his MSc in the Cultural Anthropology of Sociocultural Transformations programme of Utrecht University.
